What's challenging on this event?
  • They will not take orders or reservation request.
  • There is no kiosk if you need to search a title. There is no book list online or on the site.
  • Everything will be openly displayed, some have samples, most are wrapped in plastic and can't be open.
  • After the initial display, in a minute you'll see them in a mountain version of books that is unorganized already.  It's also tedious for the assistants to organize them back since there is unending queue of customers entering the site for 24 hours/day during the event.
  • They only have few titles for self-help, management and business.

Below are following books that caught my attention.

LINE 135 by Germano Zullo, illustrated by Albertine

In Nov 2017, I have visited a picture book library in Hongdae thus I get fascinated on what you thought of books for kids but happened to touch more hearts of young adults.

In a snippet taken from Kirkus Review, the book is about:

A child is traveling by train from her mother’s home in the city to her grandmother’s home, which is “practically on the other side of the world.” The train, the only color element of the whole book, moves through a landscape that begins as a modern European cityscape (plenty of signs in French for language practice!) and increasingly becomes more surreal and Seuss-ian as the landscape becomes more rural. The story is a gently veiled moral tale of resolution and independence. In spite of the admonitions of her mother and grandmother, who tell her that it is impossible to know the whole world, the child asserts that she intends to travel everywhere, and thus she will be able to know the whole world. Her assertions of independence and determination gain momentum as the train continues. The fact that the train does arrive at its far-distant destination, reuniting the girl with her grandmother, suggests that the child is right and that adults are too rigid in their thinking.

The Pocket Guide - Tenerife

A new South Korean reality show aired in tvN starting January 2018 and will last for 15 episodes.  Directed by PD Na (Na Young-seok), Youn's Kitchen Season 2 is casted by 4 actors namely Youn Yuh-jung (acting as the Chef), Lee Seo-jin (Three Meals a Day), Jung Yu-mi (pregnant wife in Train to Busan), and Park Seo-joon (Hwarang, Fight My Way).  Season 2 showcased how it is possible for 4 unrelated individuals to run, cook and serve Korean cuisine (Comida Coreana) to a foreign land which happened to be in Garachico, Spain.

Around Glorieta de San Francisco, the main square, is the old Francisan monastery, Convento de San Francisco happened to always be included in the scenes of the show.  Watching the show expands your view of another area, makes you wonder about the wine, unique natural volcanic coves along the rocky coastline which is in middle of the town, kids playing and pulling toys made of simple tin cans that creates noise while walking on irregular streets and on slopes.

Adult Coloring Books

It happened to be a wave or a hip last year, many have gone crazy to worked on those intricate designs of adult coloring books.  Famous books from Johanna Basford like Secret Garden, Lost Ocean and Enchanted Forest are all available and with prices dropped to less than ~300php/each.

I randomly turned the page of Art for Mindfulness: Winter Wonderland (patterns by Lizzie Harper and Cristina Hart-Davies) and bump to this quote: "I have found my greatest moments of joy and peace just sitting in silence, and then I take that joy and peace with me out into the world.” - Holly Mosier.

I had Fantastic Cities from the collection of Fantastic Adult Coloring Books by Steve McDonald, sadly I have not completed a page.  You'll know why if you seen a sample page.

Destinations by Sheila O'Flanagan

As a traveler and since I'm fascinated on trains and subways, quote behind the book cover moved my heart.

"They're all on the same track - but going to very different places...
Everyone on the train is on a journey - and soon their destination will be clear..."
