Shizuoka, Japan: Chasing early-blooming Sakura in Kawazu

Kawazu, Shizuoka, Japan

Travel Date: 01 March 2026

If you don't want to join the crowd during the cherry blossom season in April, why not hunt for early blooming as early as mid-February to early March.  This time, I headed to Kawazu to enjoy their very own variety of early blooming Kawazu-sakura. (Check the year's festival schedule before you plan your visit).

I started my journey from Kawasaki station, still dark.  I was trying to take the first train, but missed it anyway.  Seeing an electric-fan inside the train makes me feel that I'm heading to the province and taking a local train.  The first time I've seen a fan was in Fukuoka.

Along the way, there's sunrise and I'm happy to be passing the coastal scenery.  The times the train is closest to the water are between Usami and Ito stations, and between Izu-Kogen to Imaihama-Kaigan stations.

As we step-out of the station, you can already see the flowers.  The festival is very close to the station.

There are still festivities during my visit, so lucky to enjoy a long array of snacks and food stalls.  There were fruits and vegetables from local farms.

I started with red bean taiyaki, and continue to walk along the trail.

There are a lot of skewers to choose from.  And I wanted to have my favourite scallops.

I met this cutie cat in one of the stores.

Head there early to enjoy the place with lesser visitors.  It became crowded during the midday.

Try to enjoy the back alleys as well.  Saw some mandarin trees.

I've been wanting to take photos of sakura together with these yellow nanohana (rapeseed or canola) flowers.

When you want to rest from a long walk, just grab a snack and sit along the riverside.

Lastly, before leaving the place, I sent out some postcards back to my city.

On the way to Kawasaki, I dropped by Atami for a quick snack break.  The place is crowded.  Most of the stalls have long queues.

Even the most popular pudding, you have to queue for like 30 mins before you can buy one.  But I found this store and enjoyed my pudding as well.
