Mie, Japan: Ise Jingu (Geku and Naiku Sanctuary)

I did plan to start my day early because I want to avoid the crowd at the market street. However, it was raining hard that morning.  A week after, there were warnings to avoid forests and mountains during early mornings as there might be bear sightings, glad I have not seen one.

From Ise Station, it's just a short walk towards Toyouke Daijingu (Ise Jingu Geku, Outer Sanctuary).

Before entering the area, always go to the place where you can wash your hands, it's  to purify one's mind and body.

A torii gate is the boundary line between holy ground and the secular world. With respect, stop and bow before walking under a torii.  Read more about guide when visiting shrines and temples.

Another reason I went on this trip is I have not been during the time when irises bloom.  Mid-June to early-July is the time when we can see irises in Japan.

So if you are looking for one in Ise, go to Magatama-ike Pond in front of Sengukan Museum.

Afterwards, I took the bus heading to Naiku (Inner Sanctuary).  I arrived early, when I was supposed to get breakfast at the market street.  But since most of the shops are still closed, I headed first to the Shrine.

Ise Jingu is called "Oise-san" by the locals, and has long been known as the home of the Japanese spirit. Shinto shrines are sometimes referred to as "jinja", and sometimes as "jingu". Jingu are associated with the imperial family. Ise Jingu (Ise Jingu), is where Amaterasu Ookami is enshrined. Moreover, Ise Jingu is not just one shrine but 125 shrines, museums, and more, including Koutai Shrine at the Inner Shrine, and Toyokedai Shrine at the Outer Shrine. [Reference]

It's a very long walk before you can reach the main grounds.

You have the option to purify your hands from the water pavilion (Temizuya Purification Trough) or from the river.

My favorite spot in this area is spending time in front of Mitarashiba (Face & Hand Purification Trough), appreciating Isuzu River.

There are other shrines open to the public where you can take a photo.

At the end of the day, finally the sun showed-up giving a glowing feel of the shrine grounds.

Next, is to fill up my tummy by visiting the market street next to this shrine.
