Bergen, Norway: Things to do

Visit to Bergen, Norway

Arrival
Arriving in Bergen Lufthavn (airport), just follow the signs to the baggage claim, then to the Exit gates. I had concerns in buying tickets using Svipper app.  Luckily I was able to make the Entur app working, that made it easy for my transfer through Light rail line 1 (Bybanen) to Bergen busstasjon, for only 51 nok.

What's planned for this trip
The main purpose of this trip is not to travel.  But even with such limited time, I was able to enjoy my trip around the city. Let me share with you the places I went to after spending a few nights and a weekend around the area.

Bergen train station
For those arriving by train, you'll see this central station.  It's not far from the light railway and the bus station.  This is a good base for your accommodation, close to transportation, restaurants and supermarket.

Stroll along the back streets.
Were you find free artworks in manholes, walls and colorful buildings.

Continue walking in the rain.
Weather is unpredictable, it could be raining and then sunny, then rainy again.  Wear proper shoes that can save you when walking on wet streets.

It get's dark easily, and most shops in Bryggen closes early.  Cafes also closes early.  Only diners and restaurants are available in the evening.

I get to enjoy the city from the cruise, across the port and hillside view.

Got lost on the inner streets of Bergen.
You'll definitely find your way in Google Maps.

Send postcards.
I no longer buy magnets when travelling around, but I got to buy postcards and stamps to send back to my home country.

I'm happy to catch the autumn color of the city.

Aside from the place, let me share with you some of the snacks and food tried in the city.

Fish Me Fish Market, Strandkaien 3, 5013 Bergen

Cozy place, I was sitting at the corner enjoying the view of Bryggen from afar.

Bergen Fish Soup 179 nok: Topped with julienned vegetables and chives. Served with fresh wheat/barley bread and flavorful garlic butter.

Pan-seared scallops 259 nok: Scallops marinated in 'nduja, served with cauliflower and celery puree, topped with trout caviar.

With Museum Rose (Cigales, Spain).  The crew is very accommodating. I loved the food. It's not fishy or slimy at all.

Lucky that there are supermarket around the center, I got some bread and raspberry for late snacks.  On the right photo, got some chicken roll from  Taj Mahal Tandoori Restaurant.

To most of the Youtube videos I watched, most have been suggesting to visit Trekroneren sausage stand, Kong Oscars gate 1, 5017 Bergen.  I can then say its tasty.

There are several museums in the city, but I was not able to visit one. Luckily, I was able to squeeze in to visit the city library on my last night.

Got some egg salad toast from Amalies Hage cafe while enjoying the books from the library.

Bergen Offentlige Bibliotek (Bergen Public Library) is the second largest public library in Norway. The present institution was founded in 1872, but is based on much older library traditions in the city. [Reference]

Continuing with the major activities done in the city:

Took the cable car from Ulriksbanen to Ulriken.

Joined the fjord cruise sailing through Osterfjord, then headed to Mostraumen.

Took the funicular (mountain cable car) to Mt. Floyen.  Enjoyed the short hike and reach Skomakerstuen to eat pancakes with brown cheese and jam.

Attended a catholic mass on Sunday evening in St. Paul Kirke.

As shared back home, I ended crying after attending the mass, overwhelmed by the blessing to be able to visit the place.  Mix emotions of tiredness, happiness and more on being thankful and loved.

Reviews and Random thoughts
  • Transportation at the city center is very convenient
  • However, going to the outskirts may be difficult as the frequency of buses is reduced, and the available schedule is shortened
  • Daylight saving time (DST) end by the last Sunday of October. Sunrise is as late as 8:45 am.  Gets darker early as the sunset shifts to 16:45. Giving a shorter daylight of 9 hours, and reduces by almost 5 minutes everyday as winter comes nearer.

Departure
Always monitor the airline reminders and do online check-in whenever possible.  Most of the procedures would follow self-check in machines and self-deposit of luggage.

Travel date: end of October 2025
