Moji Port (門司港, Mojikō) has been prominent as an international trading port since the late 19th century. Today, although main port activities have been moved to a newer location at Shin-Moji Port, Moji Port retains its relevance as a tourist destination with a flavor from the past thanks to several well-preserved Western style buildings from the Meiji and Taisho Periods. Come here by taking Kagoshima Main Line in Moji-ku, Kitakyushu, then drop by Mojiko Station. Here are 5 things to do in Mojiko Retro:
1. Await to pass the Blue Wing Bridge
The blue wing bridge is a pedestrian bridge that is raised and lowered for both boats and people to pass by.
Bridges lowered at 10:20am, 11:20am, 1:20pm, 2:20pm, 3:20pm and 4:20pm.
Also, some parts of the port (far away from the bridge) are allowed for Mojiko fishing.
2. Appreciate the Old Architecture
Visit the old buildings such as the Customs Office and the Kitakyushu Memorial Library.
If you are into collecting stamps from places, here is what it would look like.
3. Enjoy people watching
Spend time to stop and sit around the streets, watch people and do your street photography.
Too tired to walk around the area? You can also ride a rickshaw to enjoy the sight.
You can find unique items from ceramics, small posts, travel related memorabilia, and miniature of famous places in Japan.
5. Satisfy your Taste Buds
Enjoy the food while walking on the street. You can have soft ice cream, donuts, curry, snacks and fruit shakes as you walk along the port side. What I did was to try the draft beer from Mojiko Retro Beer Restaurant or Mojiko Beer Factory.
Just be mindful that they don't have English menu and some of their servers don't understand English as well. So make sure to prepare in advance and select from their menu online and show it when you arrive.
They offer three types of beer (Mojikan, Pale ale, and Weitzen), I had Weitzen - top fermented beer using luxurious wheat malt. It is a rich flavor beer that you can enjoy a fruity aroma unique t wheat malt. I had it with fish, chips and fries.
