South Korea: Eunpyeong Hanok Village and History Museum

If you have already been in Bukchon, roamed in Samcheong-dong, enjoyed Ikseon-dong and still looking for another traditional village within Seoul - try to visit Eunpyeong Hanok Village.

The place used to be a grass field, but was part of redevelopment project to construct a modern hanok village.  This is where travelers and locals can co-exist when it comes to experiencing culture and tradition.  If you are a frequent traveler, you should know by now the growing problem when residential areas becomes suddenly popular when used as a filming location.  This hanok village only welcomes local residents who have accepted the fact the place will be a combination of commercial and residential blocks, and will soon be visited by flock of tourists.

Learn more from the Eunpyeong History Hanok Museum.  Good thing with this place is because because the notes are both written in Hangul and English text. They have also tried to display the information by having interaction with the visitors.

Watch your step!  Even the flooring is used to display information about the past of Eunpyeong.

Excavation is one way to know about the place's history.  And some of the items recovered were porcelain, beads and ornaments apart from the bones and graves.

Other collections displayed on the museum.

Hanok Exhibition Hall shares a lot of information on the development of technology on building houses from the beginning, Goryeo, Joseon until today.
  • Ability of Earth materials (stones, cement, polystyrene) to control temperature and humidity.
  • Hanji (Korean traditional paper) artistic windows creating lighting and tender breeze inside the house.
  • Nailless house buildings - from pillars to beams and roof
  • Stones to secure the foundation on the ground and to store the ondol (heating-system)

During our visit the special exhibition features "The Mask of Gubapal Sandae".  It includes the traditional various dances held in local villages and courtyard, with masks used in different regions.

Other things to enjoy from the center of the village is a small man-made lake, look upon the insect hotel and take photos of Bukhansan as your background.
