Tainan, Taiwan: Chimei Museum

I never knew about Chimei Museum, until I studied what to see beyond Taichung.

It was a sunny morning during my visit in Tainan.  If you arrive a bit earlier, appreciate that you can still take solo pictures.  The place becomes crowded once the tour buses keep on arriving for the rest of the day.

You can choose to buy tickets on permanent, temporary or for both exhibitions.   There's a discounted price of 70 ntd instead of 100ntd for the guided tours at 1030am, 1330pm on the permanent exhibition.  There's a discounted fee also for the audio guide. I saw the service and it mentioned that the headsets were sanitized.  In case you prefer to get this service, better if you carry with you your own headset.

You can also use the coin lockers so you can freely move around the museum.

Permanent Exhibition

In Natural History and Fossils, displays animals from stuffing and artistic creativity to make it a lifelike appearance.

I quickly pass by the Arms and Armour, showing the advancement of technology in critical battles.

Scene of an officer teaching a cadet (a drummer boy) who would soon train to be an officer in a strategy of war.

In the Fine Arts section, displays paintings over centuries illustrating the evolution and different influences that affected the piece's subject.  Ranges from religion, humanity to government, etc.

Looking at Ferry Boat with Cattle on the River Vecht Near Nijenrode by Salomon van Ruysdael (Dutch).

Visitors are now allowed to take photos on some sections of Fine Arts, where I saw a Picasso art piece.

The sound of music can inspire you to love. Whether you play it, sing it or hear it, a piece of music can change our day, or your world.

In Musical Instruments, don't miss the hourly performance of 'Walk-in Orchestra'.  I did see the 8 minute virtual performance of a Ludwig Van Beethoven piece Symphony No.7, Op 92:Mvt II.

Mechanical reed organs

Machines on radio broadcasting.

My favored section after the paintings is the Sculpture Hall from Ancient Greco-Roman period.

I would consider the highlight of my visit to the museum to be seeing a bronze replica of The Thinker.  This used to be part of my Art Appreciation book in high school.

Find your way out to the Sculpture Garden outside the hall.

Temporary Exhibition

Outside the Box! When Machine Meets Art - "If one's life is confined within a box, then one can only live in his secluded world." - CHIMEI Museum and Group Founder Mr. Wen-Long Shi

"This exhibition explores the connections between industrial innovation, social changes, and artistic creativity." - Chimei.

Exhibition includes different typewriters across regions.  I appreciate seeing these machines as we also used to have a typewriter at  home before the desktop computers were made affordable.

Some artistic photos were made from the basic characters of typewriters.

Seeing this reminds me of the Mending Project I saw in Mori Art Museum in Tokyo in 2014.

"A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow men; and among those fibers, as sympathetic threads, our actions run as causes, and they come back to us as effects.”  - Herman Melville

This exhibition aspires to challenge the viewers to think outside the “Box” of conventional artistic expression and with creativity. There are four themes in this exhibition— “Unstrained with Infinite Possibilities”, “Machines Unraveled”, “Materials Unraveled” and “Infinity Workshop”.  Read more on this on link.

Just like any other museum, please visit the museum shops.

Getting hungry?

There are few crowded restaurants on the ground floor, plus Starbucks and a convenience store.  There is also a snack bar and ice cream stand outside the hall.

How to get to Chimei Museum

No. 66號, Section 2, Wenhua Rd,
Rende District, Tainan City, Taiwan 717015

To head here, take a train going to HSR Tainan station.  Go to lower ground, find Exit 3. Look for H31 bus, which is an extended service of HSR.  You just need to show your HSR ticket to the driver, show where you are going (if you don't know how to speak in Mandarin).  According to the bus route, Chimei Museum will be the first stop for H31 buses coming from the HSR station.
