Reminder go to Nishiki Market with a hungry tummy. But before we go to the list of snacks we tried at the market, we'll also share what to see beyond the food.
Specialty stores like miniature plants, leather craft stores.
You can also enjoy another Kengo Kuma designed cafe at Koe Donuts. From the project
site, '
they used bamboo from Arashiyama to create a gentle “cave of bamboo” which has a soothing effect at the store'.
The market has an unending line of thrift shops, shoe shops, clothing lines and souvenirs.
At the middle of the market, you can also visit a temple, Eifuku-ji Temple (Takoyakushi-dō) 永福寺 (蛸薬師堂).
Here's the list of snacks we tried and also the places we planned but skipped at the market.
Kyoto Karaage Umeshin 元祖 京都からあげ 梅しん 京都蛸薬師店
They have banners mentioning the awards they gained from Japan Karaage Association.
There are several available favours, and we ordered for citrus seasoned soy sauce. It was good!
Strawberry Queen
There are a lot of shops having strawberry jelly mochi, but we got ours from Strawberry Queen.
10 Yen Coin Pancake
We got cheese flavor. Comparing to the lines in Dotonbori, waiting time at Nishiki market is more bearable.
There is a little park in front of this store where you can enjoy your snacks.
Dim sum restaurant (Handmade Shanghai-baked Xiaolongbao specialty store)
手作り上海焼き小籠包専門店-秀秀生煎
There is no queue when we get there. But you need to be patient for a while since the dim sum are freshly made, but definitely worth the wait.
Micasadeco & Cafe Kyoto
Seen in Netflix's Makanai episode 04, 6:20. There is a long queue when we get there. Thus, we skipped in trying the pancakes.
SNOOPY CHA-Ya
Ground floor area is crowded because most are lining-up for the Peanuts fruit pancake and parfaits.
Woodstock Nest Sweets & Goodies
ウッドストックネスト スイーツ&グッディーズ
Thus, we headed to second floor which has more seating areas.
We ordered for cube cream puff (roasted green tea) which is a limited item in Nishiki and sweet nest pudding (roasted green tea). They are not overpowering sweet, but still yummy!
This is the place if you are looking for more Peanuts themed stuffs.
This is the part of Nishiki Market that is a bit like of a wet market with seafood, etc. The foot traffic is extremely crowded that you will just be going with the flow and no longer able to enjoy all the displayed items and snacks. We went there around 5pm, so recommend that you plan your visit at a better timing.
Thanks to Paolo from Tokyo, as we were able to try some of his recommendations. Here is the map of the shops we visited in Nishiki Market.
Comment below, what are your favorite snacks or shops in Nishiki Market?
