Gifu, Japan: Activities to engage in Takayama

In addition to the previous article on things to do in Takayama (2024), listed below are things we did this year (2025).

1. Revisit and discover more streets in the old town

2. Join the parade during Hachiman Matsuri

Little that I know about, the Takayama Autumn Festival (also known as Takayama Matsuri or as  Hachiman Matsuri) happens in October.

There was a festival float (yatai) parade in the streets of Takayama.  

We also enjoyed roaming around the  market street food festival.  It's my first time to visit the other side of Takayama Old Town near Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine.

3. Food crawl in Takayama

Kajibashi Coffee かじ橋珈琲

Location: Shimosannomachi, Takayama, Gifu 506-0841, Japan

Personal preference: 9 out of 10

It's our second visit to Miyagawa market, but Kona cafe is still closed.  Instead, I was able to find Kajibashi Coffee, a small cafe with basic interior and good view along the Miyagawa river. Breakfast set is 500 jpy with fruit, salad, toast and coffee.

4. Plan your visit to Kamikochi

5. Hike Daikokudake from Norikura Tatamidaira

Go to the highest bus terminal in Japan at an altitude of 2,702 meters, known as Tatamidaira Bus Terminal.

6. Try the Finnish style sauna in Hirayu no Mori

7. Find your way to Toyama

Previously, our main base was at Takayama station.  This time, we have extended to the next prefecture, known as Toyama. 

You can buy the JR coupon/qr code at Klook which you can also exchange at the machine to pick-up the JR tickets.

In Takayama Station, there is a Bellmart convenience store that opens between 6:15am - 7pm.  You can also find ATM, coin lockers, toilet and bus terminal.
